Trump Winery wins golds at nation’s most prestigious wine competition
Two gold medals awarded at San Francisco International Wine Competition for 2008 Blanc de Blanc and 2012 Viognier
Charlottesville, VA – July 1, 2013: The San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC) is the largest and most influential international wine competition in America. SFIWC medal awards are among the nation’s most
highly valued wine accolades. Judged by a prestigious panel of nationally recognized wine experts, the wines that receive gold medals are considered the best in the world. Judging is based on a blind, consensual procedure,
ensuring competitive integrity as it remains the nation's most respected wine competition.
“I am thrilled at our results from the San Francisco International Wine Competition. Winning two gold medals at this prestigious competition, confirms our commitment to making wine that is not only among the best in Virginia,
but among the best in the world,” said Eric Trump, President of Trump Winery.
The 2008 Blanc de Blanc brut sparkling wine is made via Méthode Champenoise with our best Chardonnay, picked at night by hand and gently pressed to ensure that this wine retains all of its best qualities. After a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrel aging, the wine gains complexity by aging on the lees in the bottle for 22 months. The nose begins with pear and moves into a biscuity aroma. The long and creamy finely beaded mouth feel is perfectly balanced with crisp acidity.
The 2012 Viognier is made from grapes that are hand-harvested early in the morning and carefully transported to the winery for direct pressing. Fermented 2/3 in stainless steel tank at no more than 60° F and 1/3 in neutral French oak barrels. Stirring of the lees at the end of the alcoholic fermentation for two months followed by aging for five more months. This Virginia Viognier wine has a beautiful pale yellow color and a nose filled with flowers and honeysuckle, white peach and melon on the mouth.
When asked about the awards, Trump Winery winemaker Jonathan Wheeler commented that, “The San Francisco International Wine Competition is widely regarded as the most prestigious wine competition in the United States. This also means that it has the toughest competition between wineries. I think it is a great achievement to not only win a gold medal in this competition, but to also represent a gold medal winning winery from Virginia. We have proven once again that in a blind tasting, our wines from the Monticello AVA stand up to the best wines in the world.”
